Split is a good starting point to visit Croatia’s UNESCO-protected area as 5 of them are close to Split. For a day trip, visit Krka National Park near Sibenik and enjoy the fantastic waterfalls or visit the Kornati archipelago. For climbing lovers, Paklenica National Park, inland from Zadar, is a paradise as well as for hiking enthusiasts. The Plitvice Lakes are a natural wonder and a must-see that will leave you in awe. Croatian beaches are well known for its crystal clear waters, the emerald green colours blending in with turquoise and blue and the pebbly shores of round and white stones. Split also offers the sandy beach of Bacvice small little coves to explore. Ideal for sunbathing and taking a dip in an idyllic setting a day at the beach will be such a terrific experience.

Heading an hour north from Split, you can visit the fabulous towns of Trogir and Sibenik. On the opposite direction, Podstrana and Brela are beautiful villages worth a visit too. Take your car or the bus and enjoy a day out exploring new villages with a magical charm, excellent food and lots of cultural visits to do during the day.

From Split, you can easily take a ferry or a boat to dream-like destinations such as the islands. The closest one is Brac, where you have the beach of Bol. This beach is Zlatni Rat beach, meaning golden horn. This beach is quite exceptional because not just of its shape, but also the crystal clear waters that go from light to dark blue in just a few feet. Another interesting feature of this particular beach is the fact that it rotates! Yes, it does rotate! Why is that? Because depending on the wind, tide and currents, the tip changes its shape and its position.

You can discover and explore the city’s gems, strolling along the alleys and cobbled streets. The medieval layout of the city is a real maze of alleys lined with old and interesting buildings and shops. The architecture is varied and the proximity to the sea gives Split a special charm. The nice terraces in the promenade get busy during the afternoon and the evenings when tourists take long walks after a day of visiting.

While exploring the maze of narrow alleys, pay attention to the smallest attraction in town: Let Me Pass Street or Pusti me proc, in Croatian. This peculiar street is wide enough to allow one person to walk along it. This is one of the most visited spots in the city as well as Jupiter’s Temple which it is adjacent to!

The city’s historic centre houses the Diocletian’s Palace. One of a kind, it is a beautifully-preserved 4th-century complex. Tourists can enjoy the beauty of this UNESCO-listed palace, and walk the original Roman streets that still have their original paving stones: decumanus and cardo. Performances and Roman soldiers welcome visitors who can enjoy a half an hour show in this unique setting.

Next to the Golden Gate that accesses the city, there is the huge gleaming statue of Grgur Ninski. Sculpted by Ivan Meštrović, this statue is the Croatian bishop who defied the pope and established the Croatian identity. Locals and tourists rub Grgur Ninski’s big toe for good luck.
