Cave houses were originally used only for animals like donkeys and horses, and poor people did not have the financial means to build a regular house, as the humidity in such houses would make clothes wet and smelly the next day.

The author decided at that time to buy the best plot of land in Santorini to build a simple house.

In doing so, he considered the history of the island and the events of recent years, when most houses in the caldera villages fell into the sea.
